Identified Needs of Students
Below is a short summary of the four identified students covered in this instructional plan.
Greg
"Greg" is an 8th grade student with mental retardation. His overall cognitive and behavioral functioning are many grades lower than similar aged peers. For example, his reading and math levels are comparable to child in grades K-1. Greg can speak well, but his speech is often in small segments. He can perform many habits of daily living when provided prompts and reminders from others. Greg is passionate about super heroes, especially Spiderman, and enjoys to eat any kind of pasta.
John
"John" is a 6th grade student with Autism. John has limited verbal abilities, but thrives when using assistive technology, pictures, and other non-verbal forms of communication to express his thoughts and ideas. As a benchmark, John's reading and math levels are comparable to children in grades 2-4. John is very independent and enjoys putting together puzzles and working with anything on the computer.
Erin
"Erin" is an 8th grade student with a high-functioning form of mental retardation. She possesses a moderately sized vocabulary, but requires additional time to formulate words and sentences. Despite her verbal abilities, Erin's overall cognitive abilities are significantly lower than similar aged peers. Her math and reading scores are comparable to a child in grades 1-2. Erin is almost fully independent in the areas of personal care and habits of daily living, possesses a very social disposition, and enjoys meeting new people.
Cara
"Cara" is an 8th grade student with Down syndrome. Cara possesses many of the physical effects that are associated with Down syndrome, which causes her to move slower, have difficulty speaking, and have less developed fine motor skills than similar aged peers. Cara's reading ability is at a level of students in grades 3-4 and her math ability is comparable to a student in grades K-1. Cara can complete the broad aspects of personal care and daily living, but may need reminders to complete finer details. For example, "use your napkin to wipe your face." Cara loves animals and making other people happy.
