Assessment Measures
During the unit, both informal and formal assessment pieces will be used to evaluate a student's progress toward the goals of the unit and their individual IEP goals.
Informal Assessments
Informal assessments will largely consist of visual inspection of student work and of a student's actions. The informal assessments will guide future instruction enable teachers to provide immediate feedback.
For example, in this unit, as students practice opening and closing containers, instructors will informally assess how students are able to open containers and how each student makes progress opening and closing containers. Another example of this might involve a student using the microwave. If an instructor informally notices that a student does not understand which button to press on the microwave, the instructor can provide immediate feedback, prompts, or have the student spend additional time practicing with the microwave.
Formal Assessments
Formal assessments will come in two forms. First, written data from the daily data forms, weekly data forms, and the unit data form will be used to assess a student's overall learning. Second, students will complete summative tasks to demonstrate proficiency at various tasks.
Data Driven Assessment
At the conclusion of each week in this unit, the instructors will review the daily data sheets and fill out the weekly data form. After filling out the weekly data form, instructors will only check that a student completed a goal on the unit data form if the student meets a specific threshold denoting competency for that goal. For example, a student might need be "successful" at a task 75% of the time in order to meet the goal listed on the unit data form.
Here are the percentage thresholds for the students in this instructional plan. Percentages will be calculated by dividing the number of successful attempts by the total number of attempts made by a student at any one goal, as recorded on the data forms.
Learn and practice skills that promote independence when eating and preparing food (functional)
- Complete related goals with 80% proficiency
Develop and practice problem solving ability (math and functional)
- Complete related goals with 70% proficiency
Develop and practice the ability to follow instructions and read lists (math)
- Complete related goals with 70% proficiency
- Learn and use new vocabulary (verbal fluency)
- Complete related goals with 60% proficiency
Summative Assessment Measures
At the conclusion of weeks 1 and 3, students will be provided with opportunities to demonstrate their mastery of the material by completing a task from start to finish with minimal assistance from the instructors. This will simulate "real-world" scenarios and provide valuable data to show the progress students have made to meet their identified goals.
